Changelog
Every release of the software on the Spooled dash, newest first. Updates install over WiFi from Settings.
- v0.7.0Latest
New gauge pages
- New gauge pages built for the long screen: boost as a wide bar with its target marked and the last ten seconds behind it, and six tiles a page, each with a big number, a range bar and a ten-second sparkline
- Readings only change colour when they cross a warning threshold, and the tiles follow your theme
- Page 2 shows G-force as a square plot with lateral, accel/brake and peak numbers, or any channel you choose
- The strip along the bottom is regrouped: gear, oil and coolant, then ethanol and battery. IAT and density altitude are now tiles
- Layouts you've already set up carry over, with a sixth tile added to each page
- Map switching asks you to confirm before it changes maps, and the map page follows the map your DS1 says is running
- Name your maps under Settings → Map names. Until you do, they're Map 0 to Map 7
- Fault-code descriptions now come only from your own DS1. Until the dash has read them, a code shows on its own
- Logs no longer end their header with an empty density-altitude column
- The car's CAN data is decoded with a table built from comma.ai's opendbc (vw_mlb.dbc)
- Typing in the time zone search no longer closes it
- v0.6.12
Gauges your way
- Hold any gauge and they all start to wiggle: drag one to a new spot, or tap it to choose what it shows
- Pick from the dash's own readings (RPM, AFR, temps, speed, fuel level, G-force and more) or any channel your DS1 streams
- The big gauge on the second page can be the G-meter or anything else; Boost always keeps the first
- Your layout is saved on the dash and stays through restarts and updates, and Reset puts it back to how it came
- Throttle now reads in percent and Load goes to 250%, so neither sits pinned at the end of its scale
- v0.6.11
Diagnostics, redesigned
- Diagnostics redesigned for the dash's wide screen: the check-engine status and code counts on the left, every fault code in a list on the right, with nothing below the fold
- Each code shows which part of the car it's about (turbo & boost, misfire, fuel & air…) and whether the ECU has confirmed it or only detected it
- A proper check-engine lamp icon instead of a chip
- v0.6.10
Faster start-up
- The dash opens faster after key-on: the browser now skips first-run checks, background updates and other start-up work a dash never needs
- v0.6.9
Easier-to-read home screen
- The vehicle, tune, firmware, ECU and serial info on the home screen is bigger and easier to read from the driver's seat
- Long tune names now fit without being cut off
- New units start up much faster after the car's power is cut at key-off
- v0.6.8
A DS1 link that holds
- Fixed the DS1 connection that could say connected but never show any data
- The dash now notices a lost DS1 within 10 seconds and is back a few seconds after the DS1 is, with no button to press
- Much lighter on the DS1, which could fall off WiFi under the old connection
- Logs no longer get split or filled with zeros when the connection blips, and a short drop carries on in the same file
- Gauges drop to zero when the data stops instead of freezing on the last reading
- Sync now uploads your newest log, which it could skip before
- Logs on logs.spooled.racing show the time they were recorded in your own time zone
- Fault code descriptions now load from the DS1 reliably
- WiFi power saving is turned off for a steadier link
- v0.6.7
Faster boot on new units
- Units built from here on start up about 9 seconds faster
- An update that has to restart the unit now waits for WiFi while it finishes, instead of every boot waiting for WiFi
- v0.6.6
Ethanol blend calculator
- New Ethanol Blend calculator on the home screen: set a target and it tells you how many gallons of E85 and pump gas to add
- Uses your live ethanol content and tank level from the DS1, and picks your tank size from the car (C7 19.8 gal, D4 A8/S8 21.7 gal)
- Set the real ethanol content of the E85 at your pump, and your pump gas, for an accurate blend
- Home menu is now two columns, so everything fits on one screen
- v0.6.5
Clock beside the logo
- The clock on the home screen now sits beside the Spooled logo
- The home menu has more room, with all five options on one screen
- v0.6.4
Brightness slider and clearer errors
- New Brightness slider at the top of Settings to turn the screen down for night driving
- Error messages now say what went wrong and what to do, instead of showing system output
- Home menu fits on one screen without scrolling; Gauges stays in the bottom bar
- The device info card on the home screen is more compact
- v0.6.3
Logs that match the DS1 exactly
- Log files now match the DS1's own logger exactly, so they open in anything that already reads DS1 logs
- Log files hold only the channels your DS1 sends; the log viewer still graphs RPM, boost, AFR and the rest from them
- Knock in the log viewer now shows the worst cylinder rather than an average of them all
- Peak boost shows in the log list for every log, not just ones that recorded a boost column
- v0.6.2
DS1-format logs and log sync
- Logs now use the DS1's own format, so they open straight into the tools tuners already use
- Every channel your DS1 streams is logged, including injector pulse width, both fuel pressures and each cylinder's knock on its own
- Logs record the whole drive, not just full-throttle pulls, and each pull is still saved as its own file
- Logs run at the DS1's full rate on its own clock, and sensors your car doesn't have are left blank instead of logged as zero
- New Sync button on the Logs screen sends your logs to logs.spooled.racing when the unit is online
- Boost target now shows on the boost gauge, so under- and over-boost read at a glance
- Fault codes are named from the DS1's full list of 8,000+ codes, pulled from your DS1 automatically
- When the card fills, the oldest logs are cleared to make room instead of logging stopping
- v0.6.1
Time zones and faster log downloads
- Time zone picker in Settings, so the clock and log dates are right wherever the car is
- Units with a DS3231 clock chip fitted now keep time through a weekend in the garage
- Pulling a long log to your phone, or all of them at once, no longer loads the whole file into the unit's memory first
- If the card fills mid-log, logging now stops straight away and says why, instead of looking like it is still recording
- v0.6.0
Fault codes with descriptions
- Fault codes on the Diagnostics screen now come with a description instead of "look up in OEM DTC table"
- Covers the codes these engines actually throw, including the VAG-specific ones a tuned car sees
- tools/import_dtc.py pulls the full table off the DS1 for the rest
- v0.5.9
Home screen info card
- Spooled serial shows on the home screen without opening Settings first
- Home card shows the ECU and whether the tune is modified
- Removed the DS1 Serial row: the DS1 doesn't report one
- v0.5.8
Debug mode
- New Debug mode in Settings: adds a Debug tab with temps, power, memory, fan, disk and link health
- Warns on screen when the Pi is being undervolted or thermally throttled
- v0.5.7
Start-up screen
- Startup screen while the dash boots, instead of a black panel
- A unit that can't finish starting now says so on screen
- Closed a way out of the dash during boot
- v0.5.6
Full-screen setup
- Welcome, tour and setup now take the whole display, with no way to skip past setup
- v0.5.5
Setup that waits for your DS1
- First-run setup laid out across the panel instead of scrolling
- Setup now waits for the DS1 to answer before letting you through
- v0.5.4
A real light theme
- Whiteout is a real light theme now, not just lighter text
- Gauges stay readable on a light theme: red reading, white sweep
- Clock and date sit beside the logo, so the home screen fits again
- First-run and DS1 Connection screens no longer cut off, and both have a back button
- Removed the DS1 host setting — it finds the DS1 on its own
- v0.5.3
Wiring guide: fan power
- Wiring guide: the cooling fan's power comes from the screen's 5V feed. No change on the dash
- v0.5.2
Wiring guide: header map
- Wiring guide: a map of what every header pin is used for, and the fan powered off the Pi's board. No change on the dash
- v0.5.1

- Wiring guide fixes for the clock chip and the cooling fan. No change on the dash
- v0.5.0
Holiday effects, log names and the clock
- Holiday effects across the whole dash, from snow at Christmas to fireworks on the Fourth, which fade out once you're moving
- Logs are named by date and type, like 10102026_1154_PULL.csv, and the list sorts by when they were recorded
- Time and date on the home screen
- The clock sets itself from your WiFi or your phone, and the home screen says "clock not set" until it has, instead of dating logs wrong
